Perfect beaches and snow sure mountains, clear blue skies and pristine waters are what we dream of for our holidays. The beauty and wonder of our natural environment continue to draw us to it in increasing numbers. But while travel brings the world closer and enriches our imaginations and lives, the impact it’s having on our planet is catastrophic. At Fish&Pips, we have been acutely conscious of how our climate is changing and ever since our creation, have been committed to improving how we operate and continually make changes, big and small in order to reduce our footprint and those of our guests. We care deeply about our surroundings and what we are leaving our children, and what they will leave their children, and know that we just can’t stand still and watch. We all have a responsibility to make our planet breathe and flourish.

Our sustainable mountain

One of the greenest resorts in the Alps, Méribel uses solar and hydroelectric energy to power the lifts and snow canons, and regular free buses run between the villages, reducing the need for cars – even the piste groomers are energy efficient. As a new, more efficient lift system is put in place, the old structure is recycled. Local planning laws ensure there’s minimum impact on the environment, and the surrounding natural habitat is closely monitored – as you ski around the Trois Vallées, you’ll see information on indigenous species and how to protect them.

Méribel is our home and we have witnessed first hand the negative impact of climate change on what is our back garden, the mountains. We have always shopped locally, sourcing seasonal goods and produce, ensuring that packaging is kept to a minimum. There is very little food waste in our chalets, with anything left over going to a refuge in Annecy, along with any surplus clothing. Ingredients are checked for the use of palm oil – we will only use it from a sustainable source, and we are phasing out the use of plastic. Where possible we use recycled paper, only provide newspapers when requested and have moved our feedback questionnaires online. We recycle everything we possibly can and make sure lights and all appliances are switched off when no one is in.

However, we recognise that this only just scratches the surface. We see it as our responsibility and duty as a travel company to make every effort to reduce waste, cut emissions and run our lives and our operations in the greenest way possible.
