Guests come back to The Sandpiper Barbados, time and time again. This intimate, family owned hideaway knows how to look after people. Couple this with the exceptionally stunning location, it’s little wonder it has the reputation it has.
The owners mingle with guests and stop for a chat, and many of the staff have been here for decades, including Harold whose eponymous bar is one of the best sundowner spots in Barbados.
Right on the beach, in seven acres of lush, tropical gardens teaming with birdlife, it has a relaxed and informal air that we absolutely love. It’s a retreat that has Caribbean charm in spades, with that old fashioned, glamorous style and chic. A week here, and you’ll definitely want to return.

If getting away from it all really is your thing, then The Sandpiper Hotel is your place – most of the rooms have no TV. Dotted around the grounds, all the rooms and suites are elegant and understated, and most importantly, quiet and very private.

There’s no better way to start the day than breakfast being brought to your terrace. For a beachside lunch, sit back at Harold’s Bar (and probably make another visit later for a sundowner). Then dine on delicious locally caught seafood in the atmospheric, open-sided restaurant set in the gardens. The food at The Sandpiper is excellent – contemporary dishes with European and Asian flavours and plenty of Caribbean and Bajan cuisine too.
Lots of the ingredients are locally and organically grown, all made into some of the finest food on the island. Guests can also dine at the sister hotel, Coral Reef.

Being right on the water (and beautiful water it is too), you’d expect there to be every type of water sport available. All the non-motorised water sports are complimentary, and there’s also a PADI centre at their sister hotel, Coral Reef. Deep sea fishing can be organised, or spend an afternoon with the Barbados Sea Turtle Project. The hotel has two tennis courts, again with complimentary coaching during the week. There are two pools – one with loungers sunk into the water, and a gym. Golfers will be in golfing heaven.
You can play on the prestigious championship course at the Royal Westmoreland and at the exclusive Sandy Lane Hotel. For treatments and therapies, guests have use of the very luxurious Spa at Coral Reef.

The Sandpiper Barbados welcomes families – its a haven for parents and children alike. However, from mid-January to the end of February, children under twelve can’t stay, and children under five are unable to eat in the restaurant after 7.30pm. There’s an in-room children’s dining service, babysitting and all the equipment you need. For older children during the summer, there’s a specially designed daily programme, which includes sailing trips and swimming lessons. Then there’s our favourite – a daily free sorbet served each day on the beach… your children will be queuing up!
