It’s not hard to argue that Sugar Beach Resort has one of the most spectacular settings anywhere in the Caribbean. Rambling over one hundred acres of lush vegetation between the soaring Pitons, with its long stretch of powdery white private beach, it is intimate and glamorous.
The colonial architecture stands magnificently amongst the palms, with high ceilinged interiors and the whitest of walls adorned with Warhol and Hirst. It’s a place to kick off your shoes and be pampered. Your private butler takes care of your every need, and an eco-friendly minivan will ferry you to and fro. Given its location and achingly beautiful three hundred and sixty degree views, this is truly a memorable place to come.

Supremely private, with a garden, butler service, king size four-poster beds, private plunge pool or swimming pool, and views of the Pitons or the beach and bay, all the rooms, cottages and villas are light and airy. High ceilings, dark wood floors and white walls and furnishings, they are simply and elegantly styled.
food
We’d say that pretty much all tastes are catered for here – as well as getting a taste of delicious local creole dishes, there’s cuisine from around the world. The casual Bayside Restaurant serves favourites all day, while the elegant and colonial style Great Room Restaurant has an exceptional fine dining menu. And being in the Caribbean, you can’t miss a sundowner. The Jalousie Bar, right on the beach, does a very good cocktail. Your butler will bring dishes straight to your lounger and there’s an in-room dining service, if you’re after a quieter evening.

It may be hard to move from your lounger, but if you do, you’re not short of choice when it comes to activities. Being surrounded by the emerald waters of the Caribbean, you can’t fail to spend time in it and on it. The pristine dive sites are exceptionally well preserved and the resort has a PADI recognised scuba centre that caters for beginners up to experienced divers. Snorkelers can borrow equipment from the water sports cabana.
Book yourselves on the night snorkelling tour in the National Marine Reserve for a truly dazzling rainbow display. Or go for the glamour option and take a cruise on one of the resort’s speedboats – fabulously named Sugar Rush and Sugar Daddy!
From the beach you can paddle board, windsurf, kayak or take out a hobie cat, with instruction available. The resort also has a huge range of motorised watersports, from wakeboarding to waterskiing and tubing. Discover the charms of Soufriere or trek through the rainforest, teaming with beautiful birdlife, to the peak of Gros Piton. It’s steep, but the views from the top are definitely worth the effort. We definitely recommend renting a car and exploring this incredibly scenic island. And of course, we will always endorse a therapy or two in the Rainforest Spa. Found in treehouse cabanas, there’s no finer place for a massage.

We love the wonderful range of accommodation choices for families at Sugar Beach St Lucia – especially as they all come with a plunge pool or bigger. There are two clubs for children, with a programme of supervised activities, including adventures in the sprawling grounds and on the beach. There’s a good choice of sport too during the day, and after dark, there are regular movie nights.
sustainability
As part of the Viceroy Group, Sugar Beach has taken steps towards a sustainable future. Across the hotel, air conditioning units have been converted to inverter units controlled by an automated system to reduce the energy use. LED lighting has been installed throughout, with photocell and low voltage lightning used outside. A desalination plant has been installed to conserve water, whilst a kitchen garden helps grow organic ingredients used in their delicious meals, reducing the distance it has to travel before reaching your plate.
