Fontsanta – Mallorca
We love this hotel as it is a beautiful country retreat, with a sublime thermal spa, surrounded by nature and art yet just a short drive from Palma.
With the exquisitely azure sea and white sand of Es Trenc on one side, and the salt flats of Es Salobrar, home to flocks of flamingos, on another, Fontsanta’s off the beaten track location instantly appealed to us. Couple this with its thermal waters – the only ones in the entire Balearics – and a seductively serene vibe, a few days here feel like a lot longer. The Romans bathed in these steaming waters, with their therapeutic minerals straight from deep underground aquifers and it became a public spa in the 19th century. After a contemporary refurbishment, it is now a haven of understated luxury and chic, with wood, stone and cool colours throughout and immaculate lawns and terraces outside. Specially designed artwork line the walls and sculptures adorn the gardens, whilst attentive staff are on hand to look after your every need. Fontsanta really is the definition of getting away from it all.
Each natural light filled room and suite has Mallorcan architect Antoni Esteva’s individual touch, with a mix of old and new. And with king size beds, some of them four poster, air conditioning, minibar, smart lighting and luxurious bathrooms with enormous walk in showers, they are all gorgeously spacious and most importantly, comfortable. The Double Room Superiors with Terrace and Double Room Superiors with Patio are all in the principal building, with high-beamed ceilings and their own private outside space – the latter being slightly larger. The Pitched Roof Room with Balcony looks over the main garden and the larger Pitched Roof Suite with Terrace looks out over the natural park which stretches down to the sea. The Junior Suites with Terrace also have garden views and the Junior Suites Superior with Terrace look across the salt marshes to the sea. We love the slightly larger Suites with Terrace – once again with far reaching views towards Es Trenc. The Suite Duplex with Terrace is enormous and offers total privacy. Romantics should opt for the Luxury Suite with Terrace – with its finca style setting, stone arched bedroom and roof terrace, it’s the perfect hideaway. Or the ultimate haven, is the Luxury Villa with Pool. Set a little further away, even the bathroom has its own terrace.
Breakfast, lunch or supper, are all the more delicious when sitting looking out over the gardens and salt flats. Light and airy inside with picture windows, and a large terrace outside, it delivers fresh, seasonal Mediterranean cuisine, and all beautifully presented. Try something local from the winelist – there’s an excellent choice.
This place is far too nice for children! You’ll need to be over 18 to stay here.
The Spa at Fontsanta is most definitely the star and you can’t miss taking the waters. Springing from aquifers at a very comfortable temperature of 38ºC, they are rich in minerals and salts, leaving you thoroughly purified and cleansed. There’s an entire team to look after you and ten individual thermal baths, a whirlpool tub, vaporium, sauna and gym. As well as treatments and therapies, guests can book private consultations with the in-house nutritionist or physiotherapist. There are two large swimming pools in the grounds and hidden away amongst the trees and wild flowers, you’ll find whirlpool tubs with loungers. If you feel the need to venture further afield, Fontsanta has bikes you can cycle to the beaches at Es Trenc or Ses Covetes or the Botanicactus Gardens.
