CERVO – Zermatt
For skiers and foodies, the CERVO ticks each and every box. Its enviable position, with direct access to the Sunnegga Express lift, and located at the bottom of both a blue and red run back down, together with its exceptional menu (we’ve had our fair share of the truffle chips), make it one of the best places to stay in Zermatt. Contemporary Swiss chalet style on the outside and modern, clean and crisp alpine chic with traditional touches here and there on the inside – we love the décor here. But most of all, it’s about soaking up the atmosphere. Late afternoons spent on the terrace looking out across the Matterhorn with a drink and live music – the CERVO’s après ski is not surprisingly very popular. Match this with typical Zermatt hospitality, and it’s not hard to see why this is one of our favourites.
The rooms and suites are arranged over six chalets, each one with its very own mini spa with a sauna, steam room and hot tub. All of them come with little luxuries of Nespresso coffee machines, and free mineral water and soft drinks, and bigger luxuries of balconies or terraces with reclining chairs. The Cosy Rooms and Cosy Rooms Plus are perfect ski bolt holes, with open plan bathrooms, comfortable king size beds (twins are possible too). For a bit more space, the Contemporary Deluxe Rooms are bright and airy and we love the layout with the bed in the middle. The Cosy Deluxe Rooms all have a terrace or a balcony overlooking the Matterhorn and large bathrooms. If you’re looking for romance, then we suggest the Roof Deluxe Rooms with their quite spectacular vistas towards that memorable mountain. The Junior Suites feel like an entire apartment and also have that fabulous view. These can be joined up with a Cosy Deluxe Room next door to make up a Two Bedroom Suite for families. Given the chance, we could quite easily move into the Signature Spa Suite! It is enormous, beautifully furnished with a cosy fireplace and hot tub on the terrace. The Panoramic Living Suite has a kitchen and dining room, so you can choose between private dining and being a little more self-sufficient. The most exclusive here is the Owner’s Lodge – ideal for families or a party of friends. A private chalet, it looks across to the Matterhorn and no luxury is spared.
The food here is so exceptionally good, the dilemma is whether to go small on lunch up the mountain and save space for dinner, or to ski back and sit on the terrace with a big dish of goulash. For sophisticated dining, CERVO Puro serves fresh and seasonal cuisine with an Italian influence. The vegetarian selections are equally impressive and well worth a try. In a separate chalet, Ferdinand is where you head for hearty traditional fondues and raclettes – paired with wine from and extensive list.
The CERVO welcomes families and is very children friendly. From the Junior Suite upwards there are sofa beds for children, and all of the smaller rooms can be made into twins. There is also a small playground in the garden.
Unlike many hotels in the centre of Zermatt, the CERVO with its mountainside location, has very easy access to the slopes and guests can save precious time in the morning, by hopping straight onto the Sunnegga Express funicular. Each spa area in the separate chalets has a comprehensive list of therapies – from traditional Swedish massages to a very relaxing après ski treatment and private yoga sessions.
