On the fringes of Oia – with its classic Santorini architecture, Canaves Oia Suites clings to the side of the caldera. By day the views are simply incredible, and by night, the twinkling of the lights from the speckled white cliff tops is pure magic. What started in some 17th century caves is now a sleek and elegant retreat, with fresh white washed walls, reminders of its volcanic origins and baroque touches here and there. It is simple and sophisticated all at the same time. Warm Greek hospitality is in abundance, the food is divine and the sense of space is liberating. There are places in the world that are hard to leave, and this is one of them.
We love the calming quality of the suites at Canaves Oia – smooth rounded walls, bright white décor with hits of colour, and the blue of the Aegean through the windows and from each private terrace. With sleep inducing king size beds, rainforest showers and little luxury touches, each suite is a luxurious haven. The Junior Suites with Plunge Pool are roomy with either an open plan bedroom or separate bedroom and living area. They all have a plunge pool Jacuzzi on their terrace and space to dine in private with views over the caldera. The Superior Suites with Plunge Pool are more spacious and have equally dramatic views from the picture windows and private terrace. Right at the top is the Honeymoon Suite with Plunge Pool – making it the most private suite at Canaves. From your seclusion here, you can’t help but be mesmerized by the volcanic backdrop. For total magic and originality, one of our favourites is the River Pool Suite – where the Jacuzzi winds round the terrace. But it’s a hard choice when you look at the Infinity Pool Suite, where you literally feel on top of the world, with your very own cliff top pool looking out over Oia and the caldera. The Presidential Suite with Plunge Pool, by its very name suggests space and elegance. It is also intimately private. As is the Executive Suite with Cave Pool – where you can float endlessly out of the Greek sun. The Pool Suite is an intimate and romantic haven, with an infinity pool and very private terrace, whilst the Royal Pool Suite has a split level terrace and plenty of space for soaking up the infinite view. For families, there are plenty of options at Canaves. The Grand Suites with Plunge Pool can sleep up to five in two bedrooms and a spacious terrace with room to dine. The Canaves Suites with Private Pool are larger and built on two levels. They come with two bedrooms sleeping up to five, a sauna room and a good size pool with views out over Oia and the caldera. Also for a family of five, the recently added Cave Villa with Infinity Pool is an uber stylish two bedroom retreat with two large private terraces. The long infinity pool with wet beds is simply fabulous. The enormous Three Bedroom Villa with Infinity Pool sleeps up to seven and has all the hallmarks of Greek luxury. With its own kitchen you can be self-contained, or even have private in-villa cookery lessons and create a Santorini feast. With large terraces, endless views and elegantly designed, it makes for a very special family holiday.
With the backdrop of Oia and views out over the caldera, this is truly a spectacular place to dine – day or night. Petra mixes extraordinarily inventive Greek food with world cuisine. Santorini has long been held as having some of the country’s finest ingredients and traditional dishes, and you will taste many of them here. And very popular for romantics is the private balcony – a secluded terrace just for two under the stars.
Canaves Oia Suites is for adults only. Children over 14 are very welcome and the larger suites and villas are ideal for a very grown up family holiday.
If you can raise yourself from your lounger, it really is worth exploring Santorini. The island’s geology has drawn people to its shores for centuries and many Greek myths originate from here. Explore by foot or take to the water – the fishing village of Armeni can be reached by steep steps from Canaves and yacht charters easily organised. Stroll around Oia with its boutiques and galleries, and try some of the seriously good local food in any number of tavernas you’ll find. Back at the Suites, there’s an intimate Spa in one of the original caves, with an Arab steam room and Rasul. It’s not to be missed.
