A little oasis of calm in the beautiful historic old town of Alcúdia, the ideal spot to go and explore the north of the island.
Tucked away within the ancient walls of Alcudia Old Town, close to the main square, Can Mostatxins has the style, character and atmosphere that we love. From its 15th century origins, where the watch tower served as the town’s look-out, it’s had many uses over the years – most recently a butcher’s shop. The name mostatxins, meaning moustache in local dialect, comes from the butcher himself who had particularly renowned facial hair! After six years of meticulous renovation, with artisans recovering and restoring centuries of architectural detail and the later addition of Frare, a 18th century Modernist property next door, with its Juliet balconies and stained glass windows, it’s now a little oasis of calm and tranquility. We love the mix of old and new and the striking pieces of art dotted around. Not only is the past respected here, but the future too. A big plus for us the hotel’s commitment to sustainability, with no single use plastics, osmosis water dispensers, solar power and all produce from local suppliers, giving it a zero carbon footprint. The attention to detail, the atmospheric location and most of all, the team’s innate ability to make you feel right at home the minute you walk through the door, have fast gained Can Mostatxins an enviable reputation.
We’d be happy to stay in any of the rooms and suites here, with each one retaining an element of the original architecture. Divided between the medieval Quinze and Frare next door, they all have comfortable beds, spacious bathrooms, some with a private terrace and all having a TV and mini bar (with a welcome bottle of cava). In the main building, the Double Superior rooms come with single, a queen or king size bed and are a good size. Our favourites are most definitely the Tower Executive and the Suite in the Tower. As the names suggest, they are both in the watch tower, with features dating back to medieval times (not the beds), the original walls and lime washed beams, with the latter split on to two floors with a large living area and views over Alcudia and to the mountains beyond. In the adjacent building the Superior Doubles can have singles or a king size bed, whilst the larger Junior Executives offer a choice between a terrace overlooking the pool, or balconies with views across the town. The Executive Rooms are larger still with a balcony or a terrace and the Deluxe Suite Room with its floor to ceiling windows and balcony looking out across Alcudia is particularly luxurious.
The emphasis at Can Mostatxins is on local produce, with ingredients bought from Alcudia’s markets and local suppliers, and the menus changing regularly to reflect what’s in season. The chef, Christina Lopez, who has worked in several Michelin starred restaurants, including Marc Fosh in Palma, brings intense flavour to the hotel’s own restaurant Apolonia, with her Spanish and Mediterranean cooking, and her tasting menus are exceptional, especially when paired with a selection of not to be missed Mallorcan wines. Breakfasts, served in Frare, will set you up for the day – a delicious array of fresh bread, home made yoghurt, meats, fruit and a cooked to order selection.
Can Mostatxins is for adults and takes children only over the age of 12.
The Spa in the sunken courtyard is truly a relaxing and very tranquil place to spend an hour or two – and there is a comprehensive list of treatments and therapies. Can Mostatxins’ location in the centre of the old town makes it perfect for exploring all the history and culture Alcudia has to offer, from walking the walls, to wandering around galleries and boutique shops. The Serra de Tramuntana with its hairpin roads and dramatic views are close by, for cycling and hiking, or for just exploring by car. And for some down time, the northeast boasts some of Mallorca’s best beaches.
