The Dolomite scenery is without doubt truly spectacular – the jutting peaks that turn pink at dusk never stop drawing your eye. The Alpina Dolomites, with its glass fronted, modernist architecture, makes the most of the view, from its almost circular location on the Alpe di Suisi, Europe’s largest high-altitude plateau. Blending in with its natural surroundings, it’s built from local stone and wood in three parts with the ski slopes in between. One is around an original 18th century stuben and another is reached by an underground passage. Inside, linear design and custom-made furniture create sophisticated interiors. And as well as all the five-star luxuries and typical Tyrolean gastronomy, you can be sure of a warm welcome from this family run hotel.
The first thing you notice about the rooms and suites at Alpina Dolomites is the spaciousness. They are simply and comfortably furnished, with slick bathrooms, minimal decoration and floor to ceiling windows running the whole width – the main feature naturally being the view. The Superior Rooms have king size beds and a living area, with either a south facing balcony (Dialer Rooms) or garden access (Scilier Rooms). Many of them interconnect, making them ideal for families. The equally large Exclusive Rooms have cinematic views of the Dolomites from their balconies. The Suites are uber luxurious, with their separate living areas and decadent bathrooms. Reached by underground tunnel in the chalet adjacent to the main building, the Chalet Deluxe Suites are cosy retreats for couples. With a separate living area and very spacious bathroom, they also have a south facing balcony. The Chalet Deluxe Suites Sella sleep four in two bedrooms, with one bathroom and a comfortable living and dining area. For families after pure luxury, the Deluxe Suites tick every box. They feature two en suite bedrooms with whirlpool baths and a sauna, a living and dining room and a balcony with simply fabulous views.
Fresh, seasonal and regional is the mantra at Alpina Dolomites – nothing tastes better. At the elegant Mountain Restaurant & Stuben, the focus is very much on healthy eating with a local twist, whilst the Alpina Chalet Restaurant serves hearty Italian classics, with the grill being the centre of attention. After a day on the slopes, the Mountain Lounge & Bar is a cosy place to relax and reminisce.
It’s hard to imagine an Italian hotel where children aren’t welcome! At the Alpina Dolomites, the facilities for children are fabulous. The Laurino mini-club (open from 3pm-11pm) has a varied activity programme for kids aged five and over, and the playroom is packed with toys and games. They have their own cinema and can even eat at a children’s table. Babysitting can also be arranged.
With its peachy position right on the slopes, the Alpina Dolomites gives you instant access to Val Gardena and beyond to the Sella Ronda and the Dolomiti Superski area, whether that’s with skis, a snowboard or snowshoes. The Alpe di Suisi – Seiser Alm lift is a few metres away, getting you to 1220km of pistes for beginners to seasoned skiers, served by a comprehensive lift system. If you’ve never tried cross country skiing, this is the place to experience it – with 60km of tracks through spectacular scenery. The hotel has its own ski rental service with all the equipment you need. The Dolomites are also a summer paradise – the beauty of the Alpine meadows from June to September is breathtaking. Walking, mountain biking, golf, paragliding and the near vertical vie ferrate provide the perfect itinerary for active and adventurous families. If you still need to keep your fitness levels up, the hotel has a comprehensive fitness centre, with an assorted programme of yoga and aqua gym sessions. And then there’s the Spa for a more relaxed and indulgent way to spend your time. Even here has panoramic views! The indoor and outdoor pools fuse, creating the illusion of a lake, surrounded by terraces, with the mighty peaks as the backdrop. Winter or summer, you’ll never be short of things to do.
